Community and Social Progress

Bristol-Myers Squibb Australia's commitment to conscientious citizenship drives the local operation's community investment program, Work & Community. The program consists of four key elements:
- A headline project, involving a major partnership with the Inspire Foundation. Inspire's Internet-based initiative, Reach Out!, helps young people through tough times.
- Support for employee community service with financial and administrative resources as well as recognition of the developmental learnings gained through this work.
- A charitable giving program controlled and directed by our employees.
- A wide range of corporate sponsorships, educational programs, and community investments that make a difference in four key areas of our business: cardiovascular disease, cancer, infectious disease, and mental health.
Over the time period of 2003-2004, Bristol-Myers Squibb Australia has reduced WorkCover cases by over 60 percent. This has been achieved through a dedication to early intervention and high quality rehabilitation, which provides a partnership between managers, the EHS department, the injured employee, and their doctor.
A thorough ergonomic evaluation has been conducted for all tasks in the production area. The information from this study is being utilized to help us develop longer term improvement plans.
Bristol-Myers Squibb Australia has strong EHS management systems, which promote continuous improvement, employee involvement, and management commitment.
EHS Committees function across the business to identify and resolve EHS issues and drive improvement initiatives. These committees consist of elected employee representatives and managers. Committees exist for Sales Force, Office Environment, and Technical Operations. Committee members are empowered to take action to improve their workplace.
To demonstrate commitment to health and safety compliance, Safety Map and Injury Map audits have been completed, demonstrating safety systems are in compliance with the protocol developed by WorkCover (Victorian Regulators).
At Bristol-Myers Squibb Australia, the EHS Department consists of two full time employees who drive improvements to injury reduction, compliance, waste reduction, and recycling, with the support of the BMSA management team. EHS is a focus of all key meetings, and all employees are encouraged to become involved in a range of activites to protect our environment and safeguard our health and safety.

Environmental Performance

As members of the National Packaging Covenant, we are reviewing our packaging materials and look for any opportunity to reduce packaging or use environmentally friendly alternatives.
All BMSA company cars have been signed up for Greenfleet, and the company is meeting half the membership contributions for employees who take out memberships to cover their personal vehicles. For every membership vehicle, Greenfleet plants 17 native trees that absorb the annual green house gas emissions from vehicles. In addition, these trees are planted in the Murray Darling basin, which is an important threatened ecosystem. The native trees planted help to reduce salinity whilst providing a habitat for endangered species.
The facility has adopted the Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby as part of the company's Sustainability 2010 goal to encourage each facility and business to help protect endangered species and habitats.
We are continually striving to reduce our impact on the environment through recycling. A new solvent waste process in the laboratory has led to significant improvements to water waste quality.
