  • The Pharmaceutical Research Institute is located in Candiac, approximately 10 miles (15 Km) from downtown Montreal, on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River.
  • On its 122,606 square feet site are two buildings: The Research Center and Containment Facility.
  • Operations of the seven departments are conducted in the Research Center. Those operations requiring a specialized containment facility are conducted in the Anti-Tumor Facility.
    • Discovery Chemistry: Designs and synthesizes new pharmacologically active compounds in several therapeutic areas.
    • Process Research and Development: Conducts research and development on chemical processes for the initial scale-up of experimental therapeutic agents. Preparation of gram to low kilogram quantities of the materials for pharmaceutical development and Phase 1 clinical studies.
    • Analytical Research & Development - Early Development: Provides chromatography, spectroscopy, and spectrometry services for Discovery Chemistry and Process Research Development.
    • Analytical Research & Development - Registrational Development: Provides quality control for Clinical Supplies Operations: clinical release testing, reassays, in-process testing and environmental monitoring.
    • Clinical Supply Operations (CSO): Manufactures, packages, labels, and distributes clinical supplies to be used in worldwide Phase I to IV clinical studies.
    • Quality Assurance: Ensures regulatory compliance in the production and analysis of drug substance and drug product for the PRI and serves as the key liaison between Pharmaceutical Development and the Food and Drug Administration, Health Protection Branch.
    • The Technical Operation Groups: Provide Services the fields of Engineering, Maintenance, Laboratory Services and Environment Health and Safety.
  • The Containment Facility was designed for the development of bulk active drugs and finished dosage forms (i.e., injectable liquids and lyophilized products) of highly potent materials in a manner of utmost safety to the workers and the environment.

  • The facility contributes to the local economy through employee wages and benefits.

  • The facility made a number of charitable contributions in 2005. The most significant donations supported the following organizations (Contributions shown in Canadian dollars.)
    • Week-end to end Breast cancer - $825
    • Natur-Action: Peregrine Falcon Protection Program - $400
    • Youth Center (Antidote) - $500
    • Multiple Sclerosis Foundation - $100
    • Terry Fox Foundation - $300
  • As of September, 2006, there have been no lost-time accidents at the Candiac facility since November 27, 2001.

  • To sustain actual performance and continual improvement, the Environmental Health and Safety Prevention Programs integrate:
    • Regulatory compliance with mandatory standards and corporate policy

    • Remediation activities set forth with the collaboration of the Joint Health and Safety Committee
