Health Disparities

Disparities - or inequalities - in health care occur when certain population groups do not enjoy the same health status as others. They may have less access to health care, to education or prevention programs, or they may be exposed to some social stigma related to their diseases or to their own status. These disparities ultimately may result in a greater incidence of disease and higher mortality rates in some population groups than others. Addressing specific health disparities can directly extend and enhance people's lives.

The Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation seeks to improve the health outcomes of populations disproportionately affected by HIV, hepatitis, serious mental illness and cancer. Recognizing the critical role of community-based care and support, the Foundation will develop and support partnerships that strengthen and integrate healthcare worker capacity and supportive services at the community level.
