Psychiatric Disorders
An
estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older—about
one in four adults—suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder,
or psychiatric disorder, in a given year.1 In addition, mental
disorders are the leading cause of disability for ages 15-44.2
These illnesses can be extremely debilitating. For example, affective
disorders, one type of psychiatric illness, is characterized
by disturbances of mood such as anxiety, depression, or elation
and can interfere with many aspects of life.
While
there are various drugs available for psychiatric illnesses,
they often do not achieve significant efficacy or they produce
troublesome side effects. Bristol-Myers Squibb has contributed
to the treatment of psychiatric disorders with two new products
since 2002 and continues to pursue new treatments that are
both highly effective and safe.
