Disease Areas of Focus

HIV/AIDS

An estimated 38.6 million people worldwide were living with HIV at the end of 2005. In the same year, an estimated 4.1 million became newly infected with HIV, and an estimated 2.8 million lost their lives to AIDS.1

Although recent major advances in HIV/AIDS drug therapies have substantially improved life expectancy and quality of life for many of those receiving treatment, the AIDS epidemic continues to claim many lives around the world. Moreover, of those patients receiving treatment, substantial numbers do not respond well. Thus, Bristol-Myers Squibb is devoting substantial scientific and financial resources to discovering and developing new HIV/AIDS drugs to complement products it has already provided. In addition, Bristol-Myers Squibb’s SECURE THE FUTURE® program continues to play a leadership role in combating HIV/AIDS in that part of the world hardest hit by the epidemic—southern and west Africa.
